Parish celebrates as church re-opens

lmost six years to the day following the destructive February 22, 2011 Christchurch earthquake, a church service was once again held at the St Barnabas Anglican Church in Fendalton on February 19, with special guest Bishop Victoria Matthews preaching to a congregation very happy to be back. This service was one of a series of events that took place over the week from February 14-21 to celebrate the re-opening of the beloved parish church. They included a public lecture on the history of Fendalton and St Barnabas’, a celebration dinner and a variety concert. However, the extended closure of the church building to allow for major earthquake repairs and strengthening to be carried out didn’t mean the parish of
Fendalton, which St Barnabas serves, had to curtail its activities. As the vicar, the Rev. Mark Chamberlain puts it, “everything has been happening in the hall”. That included five services on Sundays and one on Thursdays for its several hundred parishioners. As well, the church is a real community hub for all ages, with about 40 community groups using the hall and the other facilities on the church grounds for a wide range of meetings and activities on a regular basis – weekly, fortnightly and monthly. A much-loved and admired architectural feature of Fendalton, and a Category 1 listed building with the Historic Places Trust, St Barnabas’ church on the Fendalton Road/ Tui Street corner was designed by renowned Christchurch architect Cecil W. Wood in the
Gothic/Arts & Craft style, and constructed using local stone and timber. The foundation stone was laid on March 22, 1925 and the finished church, built in memory of those who died in World War 1, was dedicated and consecrated in 1926. Over the subsequent years it continued to serve the growing residential area, and today is the focal point for a vibrant and lively Christian community. Repairing the significant damage caused by the 2011 event, which caused the bell tower to move in relation to the rest of the building, has included repairs to the north wall and east and west gable ends and repairs to most of the beautiful stained glass windows. One key aspect of the repairs was the injection of a special grout into the concrete

core of the three-layer walls, which is designed to strengthen them and increase the resilience of the whole structure. The building has been brought up to 67 per cent of code. Rev Chamberlain says the earthquake repair programme was also an opportunity to carry out necessary maintenance work on the building, including replacing the three flat roofs. Like many other church organs around the city, the St Barnabas organ suffered damage in the earthquake. Following its repair, it was the 26th organ in Christchurch to be recommissioned. A new sound system and an exquisite mosaic by artist Victoria Sharman Gilmour have been installed, completing the restoration of St Barnabas’ and providing a spiritual and community home for the parish of Fendalton, hopefully for many years to come.

Mosaic artist gifts work to St Barnabas’

special feature of the newly restored St Barnabas’ church in Fendalton is a striking mosaic sited over the rear doorway inside the church. This exquisite piece of artwork was created by mosaic artist and St Barnabas parishioner Victoria Sharman Gilmour, and is the second example of her work to be placed in the church. The first piece made from tiles and depicting St Barnabas, was installed over the front doorway inside the church 15 years ago when Victoria was commissioned to create a work with funding from a family legacy. The new piece is a gift from Victoria to the church. It is made entirely from hundreds of pieces of broken china, many of which

came from items shattered and broken in the Christchurch earthquakes. Others are from items Victoria sourced from second-hand shops, or from items accidentally broken at her home. “I thought it was positively fitting to have a mosaic made solely of broken china. It was the idea of taking things that were broken and discarded and making them into something with a new purpose and meaning,” she says. From creating the design to installing the work piece by piece took Victoria 50 to 60 hours, and was all done in the evenings and weekends as she is a full-time teacher at van Asch Deaf Education Centre in Sumner, and has a young family as well. The mosaic, which is named Sophia Divine Wisdom, features three separate images. In the centre is the face of Sophia, a name that means ‘wisdom’ in Greek and is mentioned in the Book of Proverbs in the Old Testament and in other religious texts as a personification of wisdom. On Sophia’s right Victoria has created an abstract image of Canterbury with a black line representing the cracks in the earth formed by the 2011 earthquake. On Sophia’s left the image is of the Canterbury Plains with its braided rivers and backdrop of the Southern Alps. Our famous Nor’west wind is depicted as Sophia’s hair being blown. Victoria says she began specialising in mosaic work from the time she created the first one for St Barnabas’. Another work was installed in St Mary’s church in Merivale, and she has recently completed a set of 12 works depicting kitchen saints, which feature items women use day-to-day in the kitchen such as trays and chinaware. She plans to hold an exhibition of these in the future.

A new strategy for career choice For Wen, the goal is to “change the thinking around what is possible”.
A
s a means of helping students make the important decisions about their education and career choices when they leave school, in 2016 Rangi Ruru girls’ school launched a new partnership with education and career pathway specialist Crimson Consulting – the first school in New Zealand to do so. This collaboration is described as being all about sharing information and opening doors. As Principal Dr Sandra Hastie says, the partnership will bring an incredible number of opportunities to students – “whether it’s access to one of the top universities in New Zealand, or the world, options for a gap year, or a polytechnic trade qualification”. The partnership saw the establishment of a Pathways and Careers Strategist position at the school, with the new role being filled by Harvard graduate Wen Qiu. Wen is someone who understands the importance for young people of pursuing their dreams and playing to their strengths. Born in China, she left her home country at the age of 16 to attend high school in Tennessee in the United States. After leaving school she completed a degree in Industrial Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, after which she decided to follow her passion for education, gaining her Master’s Degree in International Education Policy at Harvard University. “I spent all my time when I wasn’t studying doing education-related work and it made me realise my passion for education, especially after seeing malfunctions in the Chinese study-abroad market.” Wen’s diverse background has also included the study of mathematics and science, psychology and public policy in
“I like to involve parents,” she says, “but it is so important to get the students to think and speak.” Many of the students that go to see Wen have only vague ideas about what they enjoy and what they are good at. “I always tell students that it is fine if they are undecided. After all, many people don’t end up working in the field they studied. So picking that major is not everything. “It’s about listening carefully to what students tell me about themselves, so I can get to know them and then make suggestions and share the pros and cons of different options.” When advising students, Wen doesn’t use computer-generated aptitude tests and doesn’t come up with a ‘best match’ for the students she works with. growing awareness by New Zealanders of the benefits of making healthier food choices has seen local food business Healthkicks experience significant growth over recent months. Owned and operated by Christchurch women Ricki and Jessie, who took part in the New Zealand reality TV show MKR, Healthkicks focuses on healthy eating. Modern facilities a milestone for UC engineering
M
arking the start of the 2017 academic year, and following a major modernisation programme, University of Canterbury has opened its new engineering facilities. It is described as one of the country’s most modern education facilities, and features at its centre the Core, a place where staff and students will learn and socialise together in a modern teaching and learning environment for years to come, UC Vice-Chancellor Dr Rod Carr says. “We are celebrating a major milestone in our Canterbury Engineering the Future (CETF) project this week, as the UC Engineering Core, located at the very heart of the Engineering precinct, opens for business,” Dr Carr said, prior to Orientation Day on February 17. “The Core is a key component of the stateof-the-art, $144 million CETF project and the university would like to acknowledge the significant Government contribution of up to $260m for this project and the Regional
Science and Innovation Centre. We are looking forward to several openings in 2017, as more than $400m of major projects reach completion.” In the Core, what was once essentially a thoroughfare enclosing a little-used courtyard has been transformed into a modern, expansive and inviting space that provides students with a mix of social and flexible learning spaces. Drawing offices, CAD suites, lecture theatres and meeting rooms located around the perimeter of the Core integrate seamlessly with attractive lounge areas, study cubicles and casual seating, all finished in the vibrant purple that is UC Engineering’s signature colour. College of Engineering Pro-ViceChancellor Professor Jan Evans-Freeman says she has been looking forward to bringing students and staff into the Core after an extensive, two-year remediation programme. “We are very excited about the collaborative and learning opportunities that this magnificent new space presents.
“We will use the open areas to regularly showcase student achievements, projects and research, to host conferences, and to continue to attract students and staff to come here to study and work,” Prof Evans-Freeman says. “Providing student learning and discussion areas, together with food options, close to major lecture theatres and research laboratories will ensure that the Core is a vibrant place at all hours of the day, every day.” This year, teaching will also begin in two of the four Engineering wings that connect directly to the Core. The Electrical and Computer Engineering wing and the Chemical and Process Engineering wing were completed last year, while 2017 will see the completion of the Mechanical Engineering wing and the Civil and Natural Resources Engineering wing. Together with the new Structural Engineering Laboratory, which opened in April 2016, the opening of these wings will mark the completion of the entire CETF project, ensuring future UC Engineering
students have the finest facilities and technologies available. The CETF development will be officially opened at a later date.

Innovation shines at summer programme

very summer holidays the University of Canterbury’s (UC) Summer Startup Programme gives budding entrepreneurs the opportunity to start their own award-winning business aimed at changing the world. By working on them full-time for 10 weeks over the summer, the students can fast-track their ideas, which may be either commercial or social enterprise ventures. This summer, the startup ventures featured a number of innovative ideas including a process for turning invasive algae didymo into paper and plastic, health and safety training using virtual reality, drone control of invasive plants, and 3D visuals for architects. Ethically sourced streetwear, yak-
wool activewear, simple and stylish storage, luxury leather goods, and an emerging photographers’ gallery were also among 30 student-founded new ventures. Saving the planet from 1.5 billion plastic shopping bags by using reusable fabric bags for fruit and vegetables was not the first idea that management student Cecilia Clavijo had about how to make the world better for her children. The Bolivian-born postgraduate student was studying management at UC when the opportunity arose to gain a scholarship to work on a business idea over the summer. “At first, I wanted to develop an app that would encourage children to make good choices about what they eat. But, doing the
programme, I realised that this idea wouldn’t work too well, so I changed to VitaBag.” VitaBag offers reusable fabric bags that are biodegradable and will keep produce fresh both inside and outside of the fridge. It was one of the top 11 ideas presented before judges at the finale to the UC Centre for Entrepreneurship’s Summer Startup Programme in February. UC Summer Startup programme manager Michelle Panzer says choosing the top 11 out of 30 ventures was difficult. “So many of the ideas showed real promise, and so many of the entrepreneurs made great strides on developing those ideas all summer.” The 35 students in the programme were
able to develop their business ideas over the 10-week programme with specialist help from 47 speakers and more than 40 mentors. “Every year, a few of these ventures go on to become thriving new businesses,” UC Centre for Entrepreneurship director Dr Rachel Wright says. “This time last year, a company called WirelessGuard was presenting at this event. This year they were exhibiting their technology at CES in Las Vegas. That’s innovation in action. “We couldn’t make this programme work without the support of our sponsors and without the generosity of our business community with their time and expertise,” Dr Wright says.

outdoor clothing with yak wool sustainably sourced from the Tibetan Plateau. Founder Stefan Warnaar has been successfully crowdfunding his base-layer clothing startup and gaining media attention. Launched in the summer of 2013/14, the Summer Startup programme aims to develop students’ professional capabilities and their ventures. By offering students a $5000 scholarship each, the programme builds on an educational foundation to foster the innovative and entrepreneurial skills of students. Since it started, the programme has supported more than 120 students and their ventures. This summer was the biggest yet with 30 ventures developed. A number of UC Summer Startup ventures have gone on to industry accelerator programmes including Lightning Lab, Y-Combinator, R9, Unreasonable Labs and Vodafone Xone.

A celebration of our city’s multi-culturalism
his Saturday, the diversity of people and cultures found in our city will again be celebrated at the annual Culture Galore festival being held at Ray Blank Park. Lively and colourful, this multicultural festival will showcase the cultural diversity with food, arts and crafts, music and dance performances from the more than 80 cultures that call Christchurch home. Stage performances will range from Japanese drummers to colourful traditional dances and songs from Indonesia, Korea, The Philippines, Poland, China, Fiji, Russia and many more. These stunning performances will be complemented by a huge range of havea-go activities, where people will be invited to try their hand at things such as stone carving, flax weaving, origami, face painting, baseball hitting, bouncy castles,
